1. Introduction": As nephew of William Beale, spouse of author's so-called half sister Sylvester Jean Crockett, it is with compassionate reflection, this chapter is written, gratitude for the time spent and teaching granted by my uncle William Beale.

2. In the Oakland-Richmond-Berkeley California Bay Area, one street asphalt paving Italian Contractor - Lee J.Immel, hired William Beale, Afroid male in the mid-1940's as a truck driver. Among the truck-driving crew Beale was the only Afroid. Trucker Teamsters Union was powerful during this period. Despite the Teamster Union affirmative bigoted efforts to bar Afroid drivers from union membership, owner Lee J. Immel would have none of this unconstitutional bigoted foolishness from the Teasmster's Union nor from any of Immel's bigopted caucasoid drivers.

3. Owner-employer Lee J. Immel instructed his employees, that there would be no tolerance of bigoted discrimination against Afroid William Beale. Beale would earn the same pay as the caucasoids and, if there be any bigoted commentary, harrasment or discriiniation against Beale, the perpetrators or collaborators would be summarily dismissed, with prejudice, from Lee J. Immel employment.

4. Under this employment policy, uncle William Beale earned serious 1940's wages and undertook to support, not only his three sons from previous marriage, 3 children of current marriage - but also, the six childrenof his so-called half-sister, this author's mother, Sylvester Jean Crockett. Sylvester Jean had an abusive spouse, author's father - but stayed in the marriage until author was eleven years old. From ages 5 - 14, Beale, on each holiday, would gather all children and take us to San Francisco beaches, Richmond Plunge (swimming), fund family formal dinners with linen table cloth 'and napkins, 16 pieces of silver per guest, four course meals, males in tuxedos, ladies in fashionable gowns, music by whomever children taking piano or saxophone lessons at the time - all at a relative's private home, not at a hotel or rented venue. Author has photos of cousins Anita Ragland and Linda Williams at 10 years old wearing handmade formal gowns at one of these family dinners.

5. Over the years, uncle William Beale would engage all us children in extended conversation about social, education, life goal topics. We all appreciated the counseling of William Beale, a great person and uncle.

6. Postscript: A cutie story: This past Sunday, August 9, 2009 at Oakland's Golden Gate Library music concert featuring legendary singer Wylie Trass and former teen sweetheart of Anita, spoke with author during intermission as the two sat on the green smooth lawn in front of library under a sunny sky. Mr. Trass related a romantic story about an encounter at Anita's Fairview home during one schoolday.

7. William Beale, a Teamster truck driver had left for work early morning and generally came home around six pm wekdays. On this fine day, Anita remained home in bed, ostensibly not feeling well. One Wylie Trass merrily came by to the Fairview house. Information is not available how Mr. Wylie "Cassanova" Trass knew Anita would be home instead of being in school. Suprisingly, Anita and Mr. Trass heard someone enter the dwelling, it now being 11:00am and both parents, Madeline and William were supposed to be at work. It turned out that the suprise entrant was none other than William Beale himself. Shocked, nervous and afraid of dire consequences for being where he was not supposed to be, Wiley "Cassaova" Trass hurredly "hid" silently (Wylie thought) in the bedroom closet.

8. After enquiring how Anita was feeling and making a quick ham and Swiss cheese sandwich, William Beale left the premises, like Elvis Presley, jumped into his truck and went on his merry way back to work, laying gravel on the streets of Richmond, CA.

9. Back on the Golden Gate Library afternon lawn, this past Sunday, Mr. Wylie Trass said to author-cousin of Anita, "Ulysses, there is no way William Beale did not know I was hiding in the bedroom closet but he never specifically called me out on the incident in many subsequent future friendly counseling advising sessions in later years."
