I prepared the bed, tucking in the sheets in a way that my wife adored. I kept our bedroom dark and quiet, just as she asked. She tugged at my shoulder.

“Is everything ready?” she inquired.

“As ready as it will ever be.”

“And I won’t feel a thing?”

“Nothing you haven’t felt before, sweetie,” I replied smoothly.

Jon didn’t want to watch, but he had no energy to move or shut his eyes. Shawn’s left eye popped like an alpha male’s ego after being turned down by a high-maintenance woman at a low-key bar—it made the sound of a plastic spoon being dumped into a container of yogurt.

Shawn’s right eye wouldn’t close and despite the agony, he attempted to open his mouth, even slightly, to remind Jon that he was still alive. Hours earlier, they described the scenario:

“You’ll kill me, right?” asked Shawn. “I mean--if you have to?”

My head jolted upward, colliding with what felt like a scrap of wood. I screeched loudly, exercising my right to know of my location, followed by a crippling cough that overwhelmed my lungs. My eyes, ready to bring calm to my nervousness, couldn't assist because my eyelids were covered in what mom used to call "eye boogers." The rest of my body couldn't shiver in fright, let alone move; frozen like beef on a hook.
"Hello!" I screamed. Hollow. "Is anyone there?"
